Detecting Credit Card Fraud

Are you good at detecting credit card fraud? Maybe you rely on special merchant software. I use Authorize Net for my merchant gateway. They supply a suite of software products to help in detecting credit card fraud. Of course, it’s up to you to use it or not. Many credit card verification software programs are created for use in the US, so if you have lots of international transactions, it might not work for you. On the other hand, for someone like me who’s customers are 90% US Residents, the problem of detecting credit card fraud is relatively simple. You should check for some very important data.
1. Does the name on the credit card match with the credit card issuing bank data?
2. Does the billing address match?
3. Does the CVV code match?
4. Does the zip code match?
5. If those things do match, sometimes it would be good to go the extra mile in a transaction where you are still not 100% sure and call the credit card issuing bank and verify if the phone number on file matches the credit card information that the bank has.
There are a number of ways to check this information, so if you do have a merchant account, verify with the merchant account supplier ways in which you can detect fraud. In fact, it is imperative that you find out what kind of protection you as the merchant have. I mean, we’re not talking about selling real estate and then having the closing fall through. We are usually talking about small amounts of money (in the hundreds). If fraudulent activity is evident, you want to know what to do to avoid accepting bad credit cards along with protecting yourself and your business from fraud.
This is the biggest quarter of the year for many merchants and it is also the biggest time of the year for frauds to try to get over on merchants. Be careful, be protected, be prepared!
